For my capstone project, I spent nearly a year working with FIU's Office of University Sustainability as an Outreach and Communications Intern. In this position, my role was to promote awareness on environmental issues through outreach events, presentations, and promotion. One of the major responsibilities I had was preparing for and coordinating outreach events through confirming reservations, preparing informational materials, and coordinating any resources the office might need for these events. These events typically took place on environmental holidays, and focused on tackling global environmental problems through local outreach and education. Another major role I had was in fostering relationships with other FIU departments and student organizations. In striving for this goal, I coordinated several collaborative events with FIU's Healthy Living Program and participated in FIU's Diversity Week. My personal project was a proposed Sustainability Network, in which we connected several environmentally-minded student organizations and helped these organizations pool resources, collaborate on specific events, and promote each other's organizations to broaden their impact. These efforts culminated into a sustainability fair titled "Less Stress Fest", in which each organization could showcase themselves to students and students would have an enjoyable event to relax before finals week, taking place on April 19, 2019. This event was designed to celebrate the efforts of this network, which strives to prolong the longevity of these organizations and promote a culture of sustainability on campus, as well as further promote these organizations to the student population. This internship was incredibly valuable in enhancing my global awareness and engagement, as we specifically addressed global environmental problems with a local outreach approach. Each day through this internship, I was tasked with finding ways to bring these global issues to the forefront for other students on campus through outreach and education. It also improved my skills in communication, collaboration, and critical thinking, and gave me the tools to enter the workforce on a global scale.
